Homemade Seed Packets

I always get the most wonderful wholesome feeling saving seeds for the next season, all the growth of the year coming full circle. Seeds you save deserve something a little more special than a plastic tupperware for sure. These are so simple and can be made from magazines/junk mail/printing paper you already have around the house. You don’t really need any sticky tape either. Enjoy the mindful process of folding these, a beautiful flow can be found when you fold each piece of paper. Pick out patterns and pictures which fill your heart and enjoy this little gift in the springtime when you come to plant out your seeds.

Materials Needed:

  • Old magazines/paper/junk mail - something with a heavier weight, not cardboard, is best.

  • Seeds

  • Tape - optional

Start with a piece of paper with a pattern you like.

Take the piece of paper, folding one corner across to make a large triangle. Be sure that your pattern is on the outside of the triangle.

Trim off the excess rectangle.

Fold one corner across to make a straight line running across the paper. You don’t want the tip of the folded piece touching the edge of the triangle.

Do the same with the other side, folding the tip across to meet the fold you’ve just made.

You should have a pentagon shape when you’ve folded in both sides.

Next, take the tip of the top point and tuck it in to the flap you’ve just made. Not tucking it behind the flap but into the envelope opening.

Be sure to make the crease as close to the horizontal line as possible. This is the fold which will be keeping your seeds from falling out.

You’re ready to fill up with your seeds now.

Once you’ve added your seeds, you can fold over the top point of the pentagon. A strong fold will hold, or you can add a little tape. I like to make sure my seeds don’t fall out so I tend to put a big splodge of tape to hold it all in.

You’re done! You can reuse all those old magazines or junk mail which comes through the door. Have children decorate them and be sure to put a label on the front to make sure you remember what precious seeds are inside.
