Hawthorn Needles

Blimey, when you look at a Hawthorn tree, those spikes are vicious aren’t they. In folklore, Hawthorn trees are most likely to be inhabited by faery folk and have a powerful magical draw to them. Myths and legends say that Hawthorn protects the entrances to important crypts and stone circles. It’s beautiful in May and sends bright red haw berries to us in the late summer.

My husband and I were out for a walk recently when turned to me and said, “could you help me find some long Hawthorn needles” to which I said, “erm, ok? Why?” He then told me I needed to wait as it was a surprise, and wowsers! A surprise it was. He carefully stripped the bark and thorn buds leaving just the tip of bark. He’s going to put a hole in each one for me to sew with but I was too excited to use them, for now I’ve been using these for French knitting.

Here they are… they’re beautiful and quite strong!
